The Tiffany & Co. Shanghai Flagship, situated on a prominent corner of the Hong Kong Plaza development, is a striking 6,000-square-foot showcase of the brand’s identity in one of the world’s most dynamic retail environments.
The design merges iconic Tiffany symbolism with contemporary architectural expression—from its shimmering LED-studded façade to its layered, artisan-crafted interiors. The space celebrates Tiffany’s rich history while introducing a bold, modern presence tailored to Shanghai’s energetic urban landscape.
The challenge was twofold: create a façade that would command attention across a bustling commercial district while designing interiors that remained intimate, luxurious, and aligned with Tiffany & Co.’s storied identity.
The project required blending large-scale visual impact with refined, human-scale detailing. Additionally, incorporating traditional artisan techniques into a contemporary design narrative demanded a careful balance of innovation and heritage.
The design answers these challenges through a distinct dual-level architectural approach. The upper façade—a rectangular volume housing floors three through five—is wrapped in reflective opaque glass punctuated by sparkling LED lights, forming a monumental urban beacon visible for blocks along Huai Hai Road. In contrast, the street-level façade is crafted for the pedestrian experience, composed of a sophisticated tapestry of clear, bronze-fluted, and bronzed glass panels that offer soft, diffused glimpses into the boutique.
Inside, the material palette takes on a more intimate yet equally dramatic tone. Glass fluting, silver leaf, limed oak, and lacquered finishes reinterpret Tiffany’s legacy through fresh contemporary compositions. Interior surfaces—many made of specialty glass—were elevated with traditional artisan techniques including églomisé, silver leaf application, and detailed glass etching.
A sweeping curvilinear staircase of marble, wood, and bronze spirals upward, encircling a radiant crystal chandelier that unifies the vertical space. New display methods introduce a more dynamic selling experience, showcasing jewelry in inventive, tactile ways that speak to Tiffany’s craftsmanship while ushering the brand into a new era of modern luxury.
The result is a flagship that is bold, refined, and unmistakably Tiffany—a design that captivates the city at large while offering an intimate, elevated retail journey within.
