A 7,200-square-foot duplex headquarters on University Avenue that fuses industrial clarity with refined minimalism—balancing private workspaces, social gathering zones, and indoor–outdoor connection for a dynamic hedge fund environment.
The Scout Capital University Avenue headquarters spans 7,200 square feet across two levels, extending the firm’s signature aesthetic of industrial elegance and modern restraint.
Raw, textural materials pair seamlessly with clean architectural lines, while full-height glazing, custom millwork, and curated furnishings create a workspace that feels both elevated and approachable.
Designed for a long-time client, the project continues the refined industrial ethos of earlier Scout offices, thoughtfully adapted to the light, open character of the California environment.
The primary challenge was to design a duplex office that established a clear distinction between private work areas and social, client-facing spaces—while maintaining openness, acoustic comfort, and strong visual continuity.
The team needed to introduce privacy without compromising light, balance industrial rawness with refined detailing, and ensure the architecture supported both focused work and communal interaction.
The solution is a carefully orchestrated private-below / public-above layout that leverages the building’s structure and natural light. The lower level hosts executive offices and staff work areas defined by full-height glazed partitions in anodized aluminum, providing visibility and brightness while meeting acoustic needs. Clerestory-level clear glass draws daylight deep into the floor plate, while translucent glazing below delivers privacy where required.
A custom millwork spine organizes circulation and anchors the main workspace, echoed by a grid of open stations in matching light wood. Subtle pops of color and a blend of vintage, contemporary, and tailored furnishings enliven the minimal palette.
The upper level shifts into hospitality mode with flexible entertainment and conference areas linked seamlessly to multiple terraces—extending the workspace into the temperate California outdoors. Donald Judd–inspired shelving and custom cabinetry in the library give the space a strong horizontal rhythm, while the kitchen, enclosed by sliding perforated aluminum panels, offers a serene, semi-private retreat.
The result is a crisp, modern, and well-considered headquarters that captures the spirited, forward-looking character of Scout Capital—balancing industrial rigor with welcoming warmth.
