Kips Bay Bath New York

A high-style, Hollywood-inspired master bath for the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, transformed from an awkward raw space into a dramatic, modernist sanctuary of mirrors, marble, and light.

Description

The Kips Bay Bath is a 138-square-foot master bathroom created for the 2016 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York. Inspired by the glamorous black-and-white bathrooms of classic Hollywood films, the space blends formal symmetry with contemporary detailing to produce a high-drama modernist retreat.

Thoughtful architectural gestures, reflective surfaces, and luxurious materials work together to create an environment that feels both indulgent and timeless — despite its modest footprint.

Challenge

The project began with a raw, awkwardly shaped space that lacked flow, function, and clear organization. The challenge was to transform this limited area into a fully realized luxury bathroom that felt spacious, serene, and cohesive — all while maintaining the level of sophistication expected from a Kips Bay Show House installation.

Every design move needed to solve both spatial constraints and stylistic goals simultaneously.

Solution

A single, powerful architectural intervention redefined the room: glass partitions were introduced to establish a dedicated “wet zone” for the rain shower and toilet, separating it from the vanity and sculptural bathtub. This dramatically improved circulation, clarified function, and instantly brought order to the previously disjointed layout.

In the main “glam zone,” a geometric white marble tub sits symmetrically between two oversized windows, crowned by a dazzling vintage chandelier. Opposite the wet zone, a floating vanity of black hand-rubbed lacquer with a matching black marble top reinforces the bold, high-contrast palette.

The space feels airy and expansive thanks to an orchestrated mix of reflective and translucent surfaces: sandblasted glass adds a subtle sparkle, smoked glass partitions offer privacy while maintaining openness, and mirrored walls create a hall-of-mirrors illusion that visually multiplies the room.

Luxurious materials — burnished bronze, gleaming brass, bold drapery, and curated art including dramatic sculptural pieces — soften the formality and introduce an element of personal indulgence. The result is a refined, harmonious, and breathtakingly cinematic bathroom, balancing modern simplicity with Hollywood glamour.
