The Huntting Lane Residence in East Hampton is a 7,300-square-foot family retreat designed with a distinctive Country-Industrial chic aesthetic.
With its shingled Colonial architecture, the home leans into traditional style, yet is enriched by layers of folk art, antique industrial pieces, vintage accessories, and thoughtfully curated contemporary art.
The result is a warm, nuanced interior — classic in structure, modern in spirit, and perfectly suited for a young, active family.
The homeowners wanted to honor the timeless character of their Colonial-style residence while incorporating their passion for industrial artifacts, folk art, and contemporary pieces.
The challenge was to balance traditional architecture with eclectic, modern elements without overwhelming the home’s calm, family-friendly environment. The design needed to remain durable and functional for young children while feeling elevated and curated.
The interior design embraces traditional craftsmanship, using Windsor and Shaker furniture for their simplicity, structural clarity, and functional beauty — the closest traditional equivalents to modernist design. This foundation allowed the design team to introduce industrial artifacts, vintage signage, metal drafting scales, 1920s French lamps, and other collected pieces that add depth and contrast.
The Entry Hall sets the tone with an elegant Windsor bench, oversized antique lanterns, and a sculptural wall display of metal calipers — all playing against classic architectural details like crown molding, wainscoting, and a wood banister. Across the home, meticulously arranged groupings of folk art and industrial-era objects bridge the gap between country charm and refined modernity. Soft upholstery and warm fabrics temper the weight of the industrial elements, creating a balanced palette that feels both sophisticated and welcoming.
The resulting residence is a layered, textural, and character-rich retreat, perfectly tailored for a family with young children — traditional in structure, eclectic in spirit, and timeless in its quiet, curated elegance.
