Originally designed by renowned interior designer Angelo Donghia, this iconic Fire Island beachfront home has been fully reimagined for fashion designer Derek Lam and his partner Jan-Hendrik Schlottmann. The renovation celebrates the unique tower-style architecture while opening the home to stunning ocean views.
With natural materials and timeless details, the design balances nostalgia and modernity, creating a refined coastal getaway that evolves beautifully with its surroundings.
The original structure, while historically significant, lacked the open flow, functional spaces, and durability needed for modern living by the sea.
The challenge was to honor the legacy of the home’s iconic design while expanding and upgrading it to better connect with the landscape, withstand the coastal climate, and provide the warmth and practicality essential for a contemporary beach house.
The renovation included a master suite addition, reconfigured façade, new decking, and beautifully landscaped grounds, all carefully integrated with the home’s original tower form. Natural woods and weather-resistant materials were selected to age gracefully, developing a rich patina over time. Inside, a balance of warm textures and crisp white accents creates a space that is both elegant and easy to maintain. The eclectic interior furnishings blend early modernist pieces with iconic 1970s high-tech elements, subtly nodding to Angelo Donghia’s legacy while providing Derek Lam and Jan-Hendrik Schlottmann with a serene, stylish retreat.
