A meticulously renovated 22nd Street residence in Chelsea that pairs sweeping city and Hudson River views with crisp modernist detailing, curated furnishings, and a sophisticated, loft-like ambiance.
The West 22nd Street Residence reimagines a postwar Chelsea apartment into a luminous, refined, and utterly modern urban retreat. Drawn by a quest for natural light and panoramic views, the homeowner traded historic charm for a breathtaking vantage point over New York City—the Freedom Tower to the south, the skyline to the east, and the Hudson River to the west.
A full renovation introduced sleek materials, clean lines, and a curated modernist aesthetic influenced by the International Style. Concrete floors, expansive windows, and elegant furnishings combine to create a sexy, sophisticated setting that feels both urbane and deeply personal.
The original postwar apartment lacked architectural distinction and required a complete transformation to achieve the homeowner’s vision—uninterrupted views, abundant light, crisp detailing, and a modern, loft-like openness. The floor plan needed rethinking, sight lines needed clearing, and every surface demanded refinement.
Balancing high style with functional comfort, and creating clear zones for living, entertaining, working, and sleeping in just 1,300 square feet, required strategic planning.
The redesign began with a disciplined, modernist approach:
Sight lines were opened and concrete floors were poured in a soft gray to establish a continuous, gallery-like base.
White walls and oversized single-pane windows amplify the natural light and frame the extraordinary vistas, reinforced by full-height draperies that emphasize verticality.
Furniture curation blends icons of modern design—Paul McCobb, Florence Knoll, Thonet—with custom pieces, luxe materials, and subtle ethnic accents like shibori and tie-dye textiles.
The study/guest room was tailored with a repurposed vintage wall-mounted desk system that cleverly houses all media needs.
The living and dining areas take full advantage of the views, with sculptural pieces such as a white marble Angelo Mangiarotti table paired with Hans Olsen chairs.
A sleek galley kitchen of gray lacquer, white stone, and high-end appliances offers efficiency without sacrificing elegance.
The private wing, accessed through sliding chrome-tracked doors, features custom closets and a richly layered bedroom of warm whites, soft grays, and heathered blues. A dramatically expanded master bath anchors the suite with solid basalt, a soaking tub, and a sculptural shower enclosure.
Art plays a defining role throughout, showcasing works by Kevin Cooley, John Duckworth, Bill Jacobson, Tracey Rocca, Donald Sultan, and Cecil Touchon—further elevating the space into a true modern refuge. The finished home embodies New York chic at its finest: stylish, sensual, and perfectly attuned to city living.
